The intersection of culture and gender influences the social and economic reality of women in Namibia. In Namibian culture, women face norms and practices that limit their agency and representation in various sectors of society such as politics, religion, and the economy. However, some women are pushing against these cultural trends through cultural activism, education, and entrepreneurship.   Ellen Ndeshi Namhila is a well-known female author, activist, journalist, and professor in Namibia who has been tirelessly working to promote women’s rights and feminist ideals in her country. Her work has had a significant impact on the feminist movement not only in Namibia but also in international circles. Born in the northern town of Ondobe in 1959, Ellen Ndeshi Namhila witnessed the brutalities of the apartheid system in her early years as she grew into an adult. Soon, she became an excellent student and pursued a higher education degree in Gryfield, South Africa, where she also earned her B.A. degree. She continued further with a postgraduate diploma in Journalism at Rhodes University, also in South Africa. With an unmatched zeal for reporting the plight of oppressed individuals, she started her career as a journalist, becoming the first black woman to be a reporter for the South West African Broadcasting Corporation's radio station.
